Catastrophic delay II is a PT2399 based digital delay, that behaves like an analog one.
If you (manually) change the delay time it will pitch shift the repeats.
The biggest change / upgrade with the Catastrophic Delay II is the footswitch. Pressing it effectively turns the feedback up to maximum, and creates swells of ambient repeats, thru to full self oscillation if you hold it down long enough. It can be very musical. It can also scream full blown noise. It's slow to build up, and drops away quickly. The delay time effects how fast it builds, with shorter times building up faster than longer ones.
It has a wet / dry mix that leaves your clean signal intact. The dry part works like a buffer and keeps your tone exactly as is, and turning up the mix knob mixes in the delay signal.
It also has a tone control that only effects the repeats, also leaving your clean signal alone. You can crank up the treble to keep your repeats pristine and stop them getting muddy, or darken them up for a more BBD style sound.
But where this delay excels is the self oscillation. It's very ambient and ethereal. It inhabits that area in self oscillating delay pedals that is so difficult to get right - teetering on the edge of destruction. Don't get me wrong though, it's called catastrophic delay for a reason and it can go over the edge, plunging into the abyss.
It really responds nicely to volume control and keeping the repeats contained is as easy as rolling back your volume knob.
